Enhanceing the corporate/workplace intranet using social media.

22 Nov

A corporate intranet is where you have restrictions in place to prevent the user roaming the full internet and using certain platforms which may have certain consequences for the company for example divulging sensitive information on public forum. But there is potential here in intranets where social media tools can be embedded into the DNA of the intranet to the advantage of the company.

For example, if a business person comes out of a meeting and wants to save information that they gathered for his or her team, they don’t want to wait til they get back to their computer in the office to send it off but can simply use a smartphone or a tablet to have it appear right away on the wall of the intranet. As well as that, to prepare for the next meeting wouldn’t it be useful to be able to do so by looking up information on their blogs or wikis to prepare them for the next meeting? I think so, yes. So, what are you waiting for?!

Dion Hinchcliffe’s thinks so. ”improving the intranet locally” ”Decentralise change” (Not just waiting for the IT department) ”Push the change further out across the organisation”. Other good points are made abt implementing the social intranet by watching this Video –

I found this article quite interesting because I could relate to whats been said in it relation to a company intranet being dull and boring which is sometihng i experienced in a previous job. If this is the case in a company, they should use a social solution allowing them to take the social features and infuse them into the daily work experience. If a company uses email such as Microsoft Outlook and collaboration tools they should also make them social. So I concur with the final statement – ‘Viva la Evolution’

A quote here from Gartner Inc., suggests that over the next 5 years “40 percent of enterprise contact information will have leaked into Facebook via employees’ increased use of mobile device collaboration applications”. The technologies that permit the transfer of information between legitimate enterprise-controlled applications and consumer applications are difficult to track. Do you think that companies will be ready to integrate social media into the enterprise despite the greats risks that come with it? Or how do you think they may overcome these risks?

[…] Found another very interesting article where companies can incorporate social media in a proactive fashion into the corporate paradigm. This article elaborates further on my previous article on the intranet in the workplace – https://sopinion8ed.wordpress.com/2012/11/22/enhanceing-the-corporateworkplace-intranet-using-social-… […]
